Discover Bonaire
Part of Caribbean NetherlandsThe Island of Bonaire is the ‘B’ part of the ‘ABC islands’, with neighbouring Aruba and Curaçao being the other two. All three islands are located in the Caribbean Sea and, just like Sint Maarten, Saba and Sint Eustatius, they are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Since 2010, Bonaire has been a special municipality of the Netherlands that is also known as the Caribbean Netherlands.
Bonaire epitomises the casual Caribbean atmosphere. Life here is definitely laid back. Although the island keeps up with the rest of the modern world in most ways, it still retains its cosy island charm. You won’t find any motorways of traffic lights here, for example. What you will find, though, are road signs warning you about donkey crossings. You might even have to stop sometimes for a herd of goats. READ MORE ABOUT BONAIRE'S HISTORY |
Bonaire, diver's paradiseBonaire is sometimes called the Walhalla for scuba divers. It’s no wonder that the cars on Bonaire have the words ‘Diver’s Paradise’ on their number plates.
With its 86 snorkelling and scuba diving sites, the carefully protected Marine Park is one of the world’s best places for these activities. Here you can discover a huge range of colourful coral reefs, tropical fish and other more unusual marine inhabitants. It’s like finding yourself in a subtropical (water temperature: a delightful 28 degrees Celsius) aquarium just metres from the coastline. |
Wind- and Kitesurfing
But Bonaire offers more than just a completely different world under the water. Above water, too, you’ll be enjoying special activities on this spectacular ocean of ‘50 shades of blue’.
Kitesurfing is a popular activity on Bonaire where a constant wind makes the island one of the world’s best kitesurfing spots. Kitesurfing on Atlantis Beach is a spectacular water sport for both beginning and advanced kite surfers.
For windsurfers, Bonaire is a real paradise; these surf skimmers call it one of the world’s 10 best windsurfing places. Jibe City on Sorobon Beach, where you’ll often see windsurfers, is a piece of heaven on earth.

Other activitiesBonaire may be a small island, but there’s certainly lots to do here.
Its pristine coastline offers scenic views as you drive by. Maybe you’ll want to stop for a closer look at the famous salt flats. Then have your camera ready to snap the flamingos in flight or wading in the pink waters. Plan a visit to the Washington Slagbaai National Park with its wilderness conditions and great diversity of bird species. Take a kayaking/snorkelling tour through the impressive mangroves or have the time of your life on one of the many mountain biking trails. With so much to do, no day is ever the same on Bonaire! You should also know, however, that you’ll need a Nature Tag to take part in any of these activities in the Bonaire National Marine Park . This can be purchased online at Stinapa |
Klein Bonaire and Bonaire's beaches
Klein Bonaire, the enchanting reef island just off the coast of Kralendijk, is known for its pure white sandy beaches – a great place to relax in the Caribbean sun. You can get there in water taxi at various times in the day. The beaches on Klein Bonaire are also where the sea turtles come to lay their eggs.
Bonaire doesn’t have uninterrupted miles of beach. What we do have is a wide choice of romantic isolated beaches as well as a number of white sandy beaches near hotels with sun loungers, beach bars and restaurants. Enjoy a different beach every day.
